  • Cromer is a traditional Victorian seaside resort, with a wide sand and shingle beach popular for swimming and surfing. Many of the buildings in the town date back to the Victorian era, although the town has expanded rapidly in the last fifty years.

Cromer originated as a fishing community and is still famous for its crabs and lobsters. The name “Cromer” is probably derived from “Crow’s Mere”.

Located within the Norfolk Coast AONB, the sandy beach faces the North Sea and is occasionally affected by storms during winter. The beach has a Victorian Pier with Pavilion Theatre and houses the offshore lifeboat which performs a number of rescues every year.

Popular activities on Cromer Beach include building sandcastles, swimming, watersports and rock pooling at low tide. The pier is a popular spot for sea angling for cod and bass. The best spot for surfing is close to the pier (within reason) and surfing equipment and lessons are available.

Beach facilities are good with toilets, shops, food stands and a slipway. The 70m high cliffs support Cromer Lighthouse and are rich in fossils dating back to the Pleistocene era.

Beach parking is available at the cliff top car park. From there, access to the beach is fairly steep but there is a lift connecting the town with the promenade and beach.
